Ginevra fu il secondo Cantone svizzero ad emettere francobolli. Il 25 settembre 1843 l'Amministrazione Cantonale pubblicò l'avviso che i francobolli sarebbero stati disponibili a partire dal 30 settembre nelle città di Ginevra e Carouge, al costo di 5 Franchi per ogni foglio di doppi francobolli, di 50 centesimi per la striscia di cinque, dieci centesimi per ogni doppio esemplare e 5 centesimi per ogni singolo pezzo. La tiratura totale fu di 1,200 fogli composti da 60.000 doppi esemplari o 120.000 singoli. Anche se il "doppio di Ginevra" era stato concepito per assolvere la tariffa postale, all'atto pratico ci fu confusione nel taglio a sinistra o a destra degli esemplari da usare per il porto cantonale.
Geneva was the second of the Swiss cantons to issue adhesive postage stamps. On Monday, 23 May 1843. Alphonse de Candolle, deputy of the Grand Council of Geneva, put forward the proposal for establishing an adhesive postage stamp for the canton's postal system. On 25 September 1843 the Geneva postal authorities issued a notice that stamps were to be made available at the post offices of Geneva and Carouge from 30 September at the rate of five francs a sheet of double stamps, 50 centimes a row of five or 10 centimes for each double stamp and 5 centimes for each single stamp. Although the Double Geneva had been intended to be used as an entity for prepaying postage, the suggestion was shown to be impractical.
