Basle was the third Swiss canton to adopt the system of prepaying postage by means of adhesive stamps, having been preceded by Zurich and Geneva. The date when the order was given for the production of the Basle stamps is not known, but on 30th June 1845 the Allgemeines Intelligenzblatt der Stadt Basel contained a notice to the effect that stamps had been provided for the convenience of the public. The stamps were put on sale at the post office the following day. There was only one value, 2 1/2 rappen; one stamp had to be affixed to single-weight local letters and two to double-weight local letters or those destined for the suburbs and other parts of the canton.
Basilea fu il terzo Cantone svizzero ad adottare il metodo di prepagare l'affrancatura della corrispondenza per mezzo dei francobolli, preceduto da Zurigo (marzo 1843) e Ginevra (settembre 1843). Non sappiamo quando fu dato avvio all'ordine di produzione ma il 30 giugno 1845 fu comunicato, tramite l'Allgemeines Intelligenzblatt der Stadt Basel, che i francobolli sarebbero stati a disposizione del pubblico a partire dal giorno dopo. Fu emesso un solo valore da 2 1/2 rappen (equivalente a 1 kreuzer) e un esemplare affrancato pagava il porto locale, due per doppio peso o per altro Cantone. Il soggetto era una colomba in volo con una lettera nel becco. La colombina era stampata in rilievo, senza colore, in uno scudo carminio circondato da una cornice ricurva recante le scritte: “Stadt-Post-Basel”.
